Antique CLEOPATRA Depression Glass Vanity Box Puff Powder Jar Dresser Art Deco Satin Green Boudoir Casket
This remarkable art deco vanity box is a stunning example of 1920s and 1930s design, blending artistry and functionality. The rectangular box is crafted from green satin glass and features an intricately molded lid depicting a draped nude figure known as cleopatra. The elegant figure reclines on a cushion, with one arm gracefully resting on an urn and her legs outstretched in a languid pose. This centerpiece exudes the glamour and sophistication characteristic of the art deco era. The sides of the box's base are equally captivating, embossed with detailed scenes of men and women engaging in various sports popular during the period. These include golf, polo, american football, and tennis, showcasing the era's fascination with leisure and athleticism. Despite challenges in capturing the intricacy of these scenes in photographs, they are beautifully rendered, adding a narrative charm to the piece. Additionally, the base is adorned with a geometric design of interlocking diamonds or lozenges, enhancing its decorative appeal. The vanity box measures an impressive 5.25 inches tall, 6.5 inches long, and 3.5 inches deep, making it both a substantial and eye-catching addition to any collection. While the piece is unmarked, it is identified by collectors as "cleopatra i" and is noted for its rarity. It is prominently featured in the reference book whitmyer - bedroom & bathroom glassware of the depression years on pages 36-37. This box can also be found in pink glass, but i find the green to be a vibrantly striking addition to your vanity table or collection. There are signs of wear consistent with its age and use, including areas on the underside of the lid where chips are evident, as shown in accompanying photographs. These minor imperfections do little to detract from the box's historical and aesthetic significance and are not seen when the lid is in place.
A true treasure of depression-era glassware, this dresser box embodies the elegance and vibrancy of the art deco movement. This item is made of glass.
