Present (already in gift box). This delightful edwardian silver and cut glass vanity jar is dated birmingham 1903 and was made by the prolific thomas hayes. It is of rectangular form, the hobnail cut glass body fitted with an embossed solid silver lid. The repoussé sterling silver lid is richly decorated with floral and scroll motifs, adding a luxurious and elegant touch, with pinched borders.Includes a central blank cartouche space in the middle of the lid typically intended for engraving initials, a monogram, or a personal inscription. If you plan to gift this piece, it could still be engraved with initials or a design to add a personal touch. Date letter "b" for 1901.
This type of jar was commonly used as a powder jar or a trinket jar on a dressing table. It would have been part of a lady's vanity set, used for storing face powder, creams, hair pins, jewellery or other small personal items.
Given the maker's mark and craftsmanship, this piece is a fine example of edwardian silver and cut glass work, making it a collectible antique. No detected links, nicks to the glass or anything. Gilt to interior of the lid is intact though has a faint xx' marking to the centre. Only issue is lid slightly rises up on the glass base.

Thomas hayes was a notable silversmith based in birmingham, england, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He began his independent practice in 1881 and, over the years, entered into various partnerships, including one with ridley hayes until around 1886. In 1890, hayes collaborated with james key holmes and joseph henry key; however, this partnership dissolved in 1905.
Following this, hayes continued his work independently until he was declared bankrupt in 1907. The remnants of his business were subsequently acquired by t.
Throughout his career, hayes produced a diverse range of silver items, including sugar casters, vesta cases, bon-bon dishes, and napkin rings. His works are characterized by intricate designs and fine craftsmanship. Today, pieces bearing his hallmark are sought after by collectors.
