Art deco silver and glass hair receiver dresser jar with pansies - silver floral vanity jar - glass cotton ball holder jar - bathroom accessory - potpourri jar - gift for her. Measurement: 4-1//4" across x 3-1/4" high. This is a gorgeous art decor hair receiver dresser jar. This beautiful jar features a silver plated lid with pansy pattern, and 1-1/4 opening at center.
The jar features a pressed glass pattern of starburst floral, fan, and hobnail. Today, this beautiful piece would be perfect as a cotton ball holder. What, you ask, is a hair receiver.A hair receiver is a small pot, typically made of ceramic, bronze, or silver and crystal, with a hole in the lid, kept on the dressing table in the victorian era to store hair removed from brushes and combs. They had a finger-wide hole in the top to allow for the collected hair to be fed into the box. The hair collected in these receivers was recycled in a number of ways, notably for stuffing small bags, called ratts (or rats). Used to bulk out women's hairstyles. These ratts could also be made by weaving or plaiting the collected hair, and helped in achieving the high and filled out hairstyles which were fashionable in the victorian - into the 1950s.
Some hair would be kept to make hair jewellery, and was also used for stuffing pincushions and small furnishing cushions as human hair was softer than the alternative, feathers. These lovely pieces are perfect as vanity jars to keep cotton balls, jewelry, or keepsakes. I also use them to keep foiled covered candies, and potpourri. No chips or cracks in glass bowl. Due to age and just normal use, there are a few tiny, tiny little places where there is silver loss.
