Stunning Sterling Silver and Hobnail Cut Glass Powder Pot Antique Edwardian Glass Dresser Jar William Devenport Birmingham

Why we think you'll love this. This beautiful edwardian powder/dresser jar, by the prolific silversmith william devenport, would have sat pride of place in years past on a ladies dressing table.

It features a hand-cut hobnail crystal pattern with a heavy star cut base and a beautifully embossed, sterling silver, push fit lid, adorned with a decorative'scroll and flower' design. Here at roof & roost we think it would make the most special jewellery pot, a pretty storage jar or a cherished present. An exquisite quality edwardian dresser/powder pot. Featuring a stunning arts & crafts design to its sterling silver lid. A mesmerising hand-cut hobnail crystal glass pattern with star cut base. Made by renowned birmingham silversmith, william devenport. Date marked 1901 - and fully hallmarked as below. Excellent antique condition, ready to gift, use or display. This piece is clearly hallmarked to the top of its lid (visible in image 6) displaying. Anchor - birmingham's assay office stamp. Lion - the'passant guardant' signifying the silver quality. A lower case'b' - the date stamp for 1901. D cartouche (with bevelled corners) for its maker william devenport.

William devenport, of northwood street, birmingham (located within the heart of the city's historic jewellery quarter) was especially well known for his elaborately decorated vanity sets and engraved silver pieces. Established by joseph whitton in 1837, their name was variously styled, joseph whitton, whitton & devenport, william devenport, william devenport & son, and william devenport & co. They were noted as exhibitors at the jewellers' exhibition of 1912 and 1914. In excellent antique condition for its age with no signs of chips or cracks and only very light surface marks in general.

There is some very common darkening/oxidisation to its sterling silver lid, that could be easily polished up to a high shine as desired. I always sell my metalwares in'as sourced' condition as a beautifully aged patina is often preferred and very hard to replicate once polished. The glass is clearly of age with surface movement wear to its base from use, but free from deep scratches or defects. It has a couple of very discreet and minute flea nibbles to its rim but nothing to detract from the aesthetics or display value of the piece. Due to its value and rarity, it will be sent on a signed for service where tracking is available and a signature required.

7.5cm h / 7cm w diameter (including lid). With this mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and signs of their past life, history and quirks are naturally to be expected. I always try and clearly communicate their condition explicitly both in their description and photos.

Please do look very closely at all the photos as they naturally form part of the item's description. Prior to sale, if you are unsure or have any additional queries, would like further images or dimensions i'm always more than happy to help and advise. Please be aware that your monitor/device may emulate colours differently'on screen' to that of the actual item, all of which are shown to the best of my ability. Other items or props shown in the photography are for styling purposes only. This item is made of glass and crystal, sterling silver.
